Wear on a part inside the engine's starter motor can make the starter overheat and catch fire. A fire in the engine bay can spread and injure you or your passengers. The repair is straightforward: a dealer replaces the whole starter motor at no charge. Owner letters were mailed July 21, 2026, and the recall covers both the listed BMW models and the Toyota Supra, so check which brand's service line applies to you.
The relay that switches power to the engine's starter can corrode. A corroded relay can overheat and short out, and that can start a fire. This recall also covers the Toyota Supra, which uses the same part. BMW says park outside and away from buildings until the repair is finished. Dealers replace the engine starter at no cost. Owner letters were mailed February 6, 2026, and these VINs became searchable on the NHTSA site in November 2025.

These BMWs offer a digital key. Because of a software problem, the power windows and sunroof can still be closed even after that digital key has been taken out of the vehicle. Federal safety rules do not allow this, because someone — especially a child — could be caught by a window or sunroof closing when no key is present. Dealers will update the control software for free, and the digital key feature is turned off until then.
In certain BMW cars and the Toyota Supra, a software error in the engine computer can cut off the power assist for your brakes when the engine starts. The brakes still work mechanically, but without the boost you're used to, so the pedal will feel much harder to push and you'll need to press far more firmly to slow down. BMW dealers will reprogram the engine software at no cost to you.
The passenger seat belt has a locking mode that clamps the belt tight so it cannot loosen. On these cars that lock can switch off too early, before the belt has pulled all the way in. The belt then may not hold as it should in a crash, raising the chance of injury. The dealer will inspect the belts and retractors and replace them if needed, at no cost.
The fuel tank on these cars is made from two halves welded together. On the affected cars that weld may not have been done well enough, and it can fail. A bad weld can let gasoline leak out of the tank. If leaking fuel reaches anything hot or any spark, the car can catch fire. A dealer will replace the entire fuel tank at no cost. The same tank is used in both the BMW Z4 and the Toyota Supra.
On these BMW Z4 and Toyota Supra sports cars, the headlights can be moved side to side when they are supposed to be fixed in place. If a headlight ends up aimed too far left or right, it can shine into the eyes of drivers coming toward you, and it can also leave the road ahead of you poorly lit. Either way, someone has a harder time seeing, which raises the chance of a crash.
A tie rod is part of the linkage that turns the front wheels when you steer. On these cars, driving in hot weather or on rough roads can damage a tie rod, and a damaged one can crack all the way through. If that happens, the car may not steer or handle the way you expect, which could cause a crash. BMW and Toyota dealers replace the steering tie rods free of charge, and have been doing so since August 2020.
The control unit that runs the headlights on these BMW and Toyota Supra models can fail. When it does, you can lose one headlight or both of them. That leaves you with little or no light ahead of you, which matters most at night or in bad weather, and can happen without warning while you are driving. Dealers will replace the headlight control units at no charge to the owner.
Inside your engine there are balance shafts that keep it running smoothly. On some of these cars, the small roller bearings that hold those shafts were not installed correctly at the factory. Over time a shaft can work loose. If that happens, the engine can be badly damaged, which could leave you without power while you are driving and lead to a crash. BMW dealers will replace the whole engine at no cost to you.
On these BMW, Rolls-Royce and Toyota Supra vehicles, the camera and screen settings can be changed so the rear view picture no longer appears. The vehicle then remembers that setting, so the next time you shift into reverse the picture is still missing and you cannot see what is directly behind you. Federal rules require that image to appear, so these vehicles do not meet the standard. Dealers correct it with a free software update to the camera system.
