Very serious, because leaking gasoline can lead to a fire; the notice does not tell owners to park the car, but if you smell fuel or see a puddle under the car, stop driving it and call for help.

What's wrong, in plain English

The fuel tank on these cars is made from two halves welded together. On the affected cars that weld may not have been done well enough, and it can fail. A bad weld can let gasoline leak out of the tank. If leaking fuel reaches anything hot or any spark, the car can catch fire. A dealer will replace the entire fuel tank at no cost. The same tank is used in both the BMW Z4 and the Toyota Supra.

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your car is included and whether the repair was already done — this recall began December 18, 2020. 2. Call your dealer, or BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 (Toyota owners: 1-888-270-9371), to schedule the work. 3. Have the fuel tank replaced, free of charge.

Component: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY
Summary: BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2020-2021 Z4 and 2020-2021 Toyota Supra vehicles. The weld between the fuel tank halves may have been insufficiently welded, causing the weld to fail.
Safety risk: The failed weld may allow fuel to leak, increasing the risk of a fire in the presence of an ignition source.
Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel tank, free of charge. The recall began December 18, 2020. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371.
