Ram 1500 4x4 can slip into neutral, lose park

NHTSA campaign 20V080000 · Reported 2020-02-13 · Chrysler (FCA US LLC)

high How serious is it? About this label

A sudden loss of power in traffic or a truck that rolls away when parked can both cause a crash; the notice does not tell owners to stop driving, but get it in soon and always set the parking brake.

What's wrong, in plain English

On certain 2019 Ram 1500 four-wheel-drive pickups, a gear inside the transfer case — the part that sends power to the front and rear wheels — may have been installed incorrectly. If that gear slips, the truck can drop into neutral on its own, so the engine still runs but the truck stops pulling. The same failure can stop the park setting from holding the truck in place, meaning it could roll after you shift into park and get out.

What you should do

1. Look up your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if your truck is included.
2. Call your Ram dealer or Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403 (recall W06) to schedule the repair.
3. Dealers replace the whole transfer case at no cost; use the parking brake every time until it is done.
