Serious, since leaking fluid can make the road slippery and lead to a crash; the notice does not say to stop driving, but get it checked promptly, especially if you see fluid under the car.

What's wrong, in plain English

A pipe that carries your automatic transmission's fluid may have a weak weld where it was joined together. That weak spot can let transmission fluid leak out of the vehicle. If the fluid drips onto the pavement while you are driving, it leaves a slick patch on the road behind you, which can cause a vehicle to lose grip. A dealer will look at the pipe and fit a new one if it is faulty.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if your Q8 is affected. 2. Contact your Volkswagen or Audi dealer, or Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-253-2834 (recall 38C7), to schedule the inspection. 3. The pipe will be inspected and replaced if needed at no cost to you.

Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2020 Audi Q8 vehicles. An insufficient weld on a transmission oil pipe may cause the vehicle to leak automatic transmission fluid (ATF).
Safety risk: If transmission fluid leaks while driving, the road surface may become slippery, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the transmission oil pipe and replace it if necessary, free of charge. The recall began June 12, 2020. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 38C7.
