Volkswagen Golf GTI Has Wrong VIN on Label

NHTSA campaign 20V372000 · Reported 2020-06-24 · Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.

low How serious is it? About this label

If the stamped vehicle identification number (VIN) does not match the VIN on the Vehicle Certification Label, owners may be unable to tell if their vehicle is under an important safety recall, possibly exposing them to an increased risk of a crash, fire or injury. The notice does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

Only two 2018 Golf GTIs are involved. The sticker that certifies the car meets federal safety rules shows a vehicle identification number that does not match the number actually stamped on the car. Nothing mechanical is wrong. The problem is that the wrong number can stop you from finding out whether your car is included in a future safety recall, which could leave a real defect unrepaired. The dealer puts on a corrected label for free.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, using the number stamped on the vehicle. 2. Contact your Volkswagen dealer or Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298 and mention recall 01E7. 3. Have the corrected certification label installed — it is free.
