If the rear axles are overloaded, over time the wheel hubs may fail prematurely, increasing the risk of a crash. The notice does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

The certification sticker on these vehicles lists how much weight the rear drive axles are allowed to carry, and the number printed there is higher than what the wheel hubs can actually handle. If someone loads the vehicle up to the weight shown on that label, the rear wheel hubs can wear out and fail earlier than they should, which could lead to a crash. Volvo is mailing a corrected sticker; nothing on the vehicle itself needs to be repaired.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if your vehicle is covered.
2. Contact Volvo customer service at 1-800-528-6586 (recall RVXX2002) if the replacement label has not arrived.
3. Apply the corrected label over the old one and load to the new rating — labels are free.

Summary: Volvo Trucks North America (Volvo) is recalling certain 2018-2021 VNL and VNR buses. The Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) for the rear drive axles stated on the Federal Certification Label exceeds the rating of the wheel hubs. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of 49 CFR Part 567, "Certification."
Safety risk: If the rear axles are overloaded, over time the wheel hubs may fail prematurely, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Volvo will notify owners and send corrected replacement labels, free of charge. The recall began August 18, 2020. Owners may contact Volvo customer service at 1-800-528-6586. Volvo's number for this recall is RVXX2002.
