BMW fuel system recalls: leaks, fire risk, and gauge faults
Fuel leaks dominate this group: four of the five recalls are rated critical, and each involves a different point along the fuel path. Fuel injectors were assembled without a damping component on 2020-2021 M2 Coupe and 2020 M4 Coupe, letting vibration work on the injector-to-fuel-rail connection. The weld between the fuel tank halves may fail on 2020-2021 Z4 and Toyota Supra. An inlet check valve weld can fail on 2021 X3 and X4, allowing the filler pipe to separate from the tank. And the high-pressure fuel rail can crack on 2022 X1 xDrive28i, X3 xDrive30i and 228i Gran Coupe. The fifth is different in kind — a 2018 M5 fuel level sensor that sticks and overstates remaining fuel.
Warning signs to watch for
- A smell of gasoline, particularly from the engine compartment.
- A fuel puddle or wet patch under the car where it has been parked.
- On a 2018 M5, a fuel gauge reading higher than the fuel actually in the tank.
- Running low and stalling sooner than the gauge indicated.
Is it safe to keep driving?
None of these recalls carries a stop-driving or park-outside order. BMW still treats the four leak recalls as urgent fire risks — have the inspection or replacement done as soon as possible. The notices add one rule: if you smell gasoline or see a puddle under the car, stop driving it and call for help rather than continuing. BMW reports the 2021 X3 and X4 filler pipe repairs are all complete, so confirm yours was done. The 2018 M5 gauge fault carries no driving restriction, though the car could stall if it runs dry.
What the free repair involves
All work is free of charge. Dealers inspect the M2 and M4 fuel injectors and, where the damping component is missing, replace the injectors and the fuel rail. The Z4, Supra, X3 and X4 receive a complete fuel tank replacement. The 2022 X1, X3 and 228i get a new high-pressure fuel rail. On the 2018 M5, dealers secure the in-tank fuel line away from the fuel level sensor.
