The air bag will not deploy during a crash if a front passenger is undetected, increasing the risk of injury. The notice does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

A pressure-sensitive mat built into the front passenger seat tells the car whether someone is sitting there. Over time that mat can break down and stop detecting a passenger. If the car believes the seat is empty, it will not fire the front passenger airbag in a crash, even with a person sitting in it. That passenger would have only the seat belt for protection. Dealers replace the sensor mat and the seat cushion at no cost.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your Macan is affected. 2. Contact a Porsche dealer for the free sensor mat and seat cushion replacement (recall AMA2). 3. Call Porsche at 1-800-767-7243 with questions. There is no charge for the repair.

Summary: Porsche Cars North America, Inc. (Porsche) is recalling certain 2017-2018 Macan, Macan Turbo Kits, Macan GTS, 2015-2018 Macan S, and Macan Turbo vehicles. The front passenger seat occupancy sensor mat may degrade and fail to detect a passenger in the front seat.
Safety risk: The air bag will not deploy during a crash if a front passenger is undetected, increasing the risk of injury.
Remedy: Porsche will notify owners, and dealers will replace the sensor mat and seat cushion, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed October 25, 2021. Owners may contact Porsche customer service at 1-800-767-7243. Porsche's number for this recall is AMA2.
