Porsche airbag recalls: when the passenger airbag stops working right
All three of these Porsche recalls involve a front airbag that behaves incorrectly, and two of them trace to the passenger seat itself. On 2015-2018 Macan, Macan S, Macan GTS and Macan Turbo models, the front passenger seat occupancy sensor mat can degrade so the system fails to detect a passenger and the airbag may not deploy. On 2022-2023 Taycans, an occupant classification system error can deactivate the front passenger airbag outright. The third runs the other direction: 2021-2024 911s ordered with the optional full bucket seats — GT3, GT3 RS, Turbo S, Carrera GTS, Dakar and others — can fire the seat-mounted airbag unnecessarily. Seat hardware replacement fixes the first two; the 911 needs reprogramming.
Warning signs to watch for
- The passenger airbag status light shows OFF while an adult is sitting in the front passenger seat
- The system does not register a front passenger at all
- On affected 911s, the seat-mounted airbag deploying when there is no reason for it to
- Often nothing to notice: the Macan and Taycan faults may only show up in a crash, when the airbag does not deploy
Is it safe to keep driving?
Porsche does not tell owners to stop driving or park outside for any of the three. The notices are explicit that these cars drive and brake normally — the problem only matters at the moment of a crash. The consequence is serious, though: a front passenger could be hurt far worse because the airbag did not deploy, or on affected 911s could be injured by a seat airbag firing when it should not. Keep driving if you must, but schedule the free repair promptly rather than waiting.
What the free repair involves
The seat-related recalls are hardware. On the Macan, dealers replace the front passenger occupancy sensor mat and the seat cushion. On the 2022-2023 Taycan, dealers replace the front passenger seat cushion. On 911s with full bucket seats, dealers reprogram the airbag control unit instead — a software change, no parts. All three repairs are free of charge.

Common questions
The passenger airbag light says OFF with someone sitting there — is that this recall?
It may be. Both the Macan sensor mat and the Taycan occupant classification recalls involve the system failing to recognize a front passenger, which can deactivate that airbag. Have a Porsche dealer check your VIN rather than assuming it is a seat quirk.
Does the 911 recall apply if I did not order bucket seats?
No. That campaign covers 2021-2024 911s equipped with the optional full bucket seats, where the seat-mounted airbag may deploy unnecessarily. Cars with the standard seats are not included. Porsche can confirm by VIN at 1-800-767-7243.
Can someone still ride in the front passenger seat?
None of the notices restrict driving or seating, and Porsche did not tell owners to leave the seat empty. But since the airbag may not deploy, or on affected 911s may fire when it should not, get the free repair scheduled promptly.
