Very serious — a wheel can separate suddenly with little warning and cause a crash, so get the inspection done as soon as you can rather than putting it off.

What's wrong, in plain English

The holes in the wheels that the lug bolts pass through may have been cut wrong at the factory. Because of that, the bolts may not grip the hub the way they should, so a wheel can work loose as you drive and, in the worst case, come off the vehicle entirely. A wheel separating at speed can make the vehicle impossible to control. Dealers inspect all four wheels and replace wheels, bolts, and wheel bearings as needed, free of charge.

Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2021 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport vehicles. The lug bolt holes on the wheels may have been machined incorrectly, preventing the wheel bolt from sufficiently attaching to the wheel bearing hub.
Safety risk: An insufficiently attached wheel may separate from the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will inspect all four wheels, and as necessary, replace the wheels, lug bolts ,and wheel bearings, free of charge. The recall began March 4, 2021. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 44Q9.
