Are Volkswagen wheels coming loose? Bearing and lug bolt recalls explained

Every recall here comes from something done wrong to a front wheel at the factory. In December 2019 Volkswagen recalled 2019 Jetta GLI, Golf Alltrack and Golf GTI vehicles whose front wheel bearings were improperly machined, putting excessive stress on the wheel, wheel bolts or bearings — the one recall in this group where Volkswagen says not to drive. Model year 2021 then brought two more: lug bolt holes machined incorrectly on 2021 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport wheels, so the bolt cannot attach sufficiently to the hub, and front wheel bearing bolts left incorrectly tightened on 2021 Atlas, Atlas Cross Sport and Passat. The Atlas family appears in both 2021 actions.
Warning signs to watch for
- Often nothing at all — Volkswagen warns a front wheel or bearing can fail with little or no warning.
- A wheel that feels loose, or wheel bolts that will not stay tight, on a 2021 Atlas, Atlas Cross Sport or Passat.
- Lug bolts that do not seat or grip properly in the wheel.
- In the 2019 recall, front wheel bearings, wheels and bolts carrying excessive stress from improper machining.
Is it safe to keep driving?
These split cleanly. For the 2019 Jetta GLI, Golf Alltrack and Golf GTI bearing recall, Volkswagen says not to drive the vehicle until the repairs have been made — a front wheel problem there can cause a crash with little or no warning. The two 2021 recalls covering Atlas, Atlas Cross Sport and Passat carry no stop-driving instruction, but a wheel can separate suddenly and loose bolts can cause a loss of control, so book the inspection as soon as you can.
What the free repair involves
All three are dealer jobs done free of charge, and none is a software or over-the-air fix. On the 2019 cars, dealers replace the wheel bearing assemblies, wheels and wheel bolts. On the 2021 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport, dealers inspect all four wheels and replace wheels, lug bolts and wheel bearings as necessary. On the later 2021 recall, dealers check wheel bearing bolt tightness and replace bolts as needed.

Do dealers check all four wheels on an Atlas?
On the 2021 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport lug bolt hole recall, yes — dealers inspect all four wheels and replace the wheels, lug bolts and wheel bearings as necessary, free of charge.
Can my 2021 Atlas be covered by both wheel recalls?
They are separate actions with different faults — incorrectly machined lug bolt holes in the wheels, and incorrectly tightened front wheel bearing bolts. Check your VIN against each one; a 2021 Atlas or Atlas Cross Sport can appear in both.
