Serious but not urgent enough to stop driving — the car still brakes normally; the danger is being rear-ended because drivers behind you cannot see you slowing.

What's wrong, in plain English

The switch that turns on your brake lights when you press the brake pedal can get contaminated inside. When that happens the electrical connection does not close, and your brake lights stay dark even though you are actually slowing down. Drivers behind you get no warning that you are braking. The problem can come and go, and you would not notice it from the driver's seat unless someone tells you. The dealer replaces the switch and adds a protective seal to keep dirt out.

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if your Sentra is covered. 2. Call a Nissan dealer and schedule the free brake light switch replacement (recall PM971). 3. For help, call Nissan at 1-800-867-7769. The repair costs you nothing.

Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2016-2019 Nissan Sentra vehicles. The brake light switch may become contaminated, preventing the circuit from closing and the brake lights from illuminating.
Safety risk: The brake lights may not illuminate, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Dealers will replace the brake light switch and install a protective grommet, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 1, 2022. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800867-7769. Nissan's number for this recall is PM971.
