Ford F-53 and F-59 chassis rear axle can fail

NHTSA campaign 21V202000 · Reported 2021-03-24 · Ford Motor Company

high How serious is it? About this label

Serious — a broken axle or driveshaft can leave you stranded in traffic and unable to park safely, raising crash risk; the notice does not say to stop driving, but do not delay the free inspection.

What's wrong, in plain English

These motorhome and commercial chassis may not have enough lubricant in the rear axle. Without it, the rear wheel bearings can be damaged and seize up, and the rear axle or driveshaft can break. If that happens, the vehicle can lose power to the wheels, the parking brake may not hold, and you may not be able to shift into Park. A dealer will inspect the rear wheel bearings and replace them if needed.

What you should do

1. Look up the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm the chassis is covered.
2. Contact a Ford dealer or Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 (recall 21S17) to schedule the inspection.
3. Have the bearings inspected and replaced as needed — free of charge.
