Moderately serious: a blank screen instead of a camera view cuts down what you can see behind you and raises the chance of backing into something or someone, but there is no order to stop driving — just check your mirrors and look over your shoulder until it is fixed.

What's wrong, in plain English

Certain Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes-AMG models have a software problem in the MBUX multimedia system. The center display can stay black or restart itself after you start the car. When that happens, the backup camera picture may not appear correctly when you shift into reverse, so you cannot see what is behind you on the screen. Because of this, the vehicles do not meet the federal rear visibility rule. A software update fixes it at no charge.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your vehicle is included in recall 21V354000.
2. Accept the free over-the-air software update if your car offers one, or book a dealer appointment for the update.
3. If you have questions or no update appears, call Mercedes-Benz USA customer service at 1-800-367-6373 and reference recall 2021050012.

Summary
Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2019-2021 CLA-Class, GLE/GLS-Class, A-Class, E-Class, E-Class Coupe and Convertible, GLA/GLB-Class, GLC-Class, CLS-Class, and AMG GT-Class 4-door Coupe vehicles. Please refer to MBUSA's recall report for specific vehicle model details. The MBUX multimedia system software may cause the display to remain black, or reboot after startup. This could result in the rearview camera image not displaying properly. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility."
Safety risk
A backup camera that displays a blank image reduces the driver's rear view, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.
Remedy
The multimedia system software will be updated by a dealer, or through an over-the-air (OTA) update, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed beginning June 28, 2021. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6373. MBUSA's number for this recall is 2021050012. (over-the-air software update)
