Ram 3500, 4500 and 5500 may miss low-oil warning

NHTSA campaign 21V439000 · Reported 2021-06-10 · Chrysler (FCA US, LLC)

critical How serious is it? About this label

Serious — engine damage and an oil leak can lead to a fire, and while the notice does not tell owners to stop driving or park outside, the free update should not be put off.

What's wrong, in plain English

On these cab chassis trucks with the Cummins 6.7-liter High Output engine, the engine's software may not warn you when the oil level gets too low. Running the engine low on oil can damage it, and that damage can cause an oil leak or even a hole in the engine block. Either one raises the chance of a fire. Dealers will update the engine software at no cost. Owner letters were mailed June 25, 2021.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your truck is covered.
2. Contact your Ram dealer, or FCA customer service at 1-800-853-1403, and mention recall Y21.
3. Have the engine software updated — it is free.
