Volkswagen Jetta airbags may deploy improperly or unexpectedly

NHTSA campaign 21V492000 · Reported 2021-06-30 · Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.

critical How serious is it? About this label

This one is serious because the airbags can go off with no warning while you are driving; Volkswagen does not tell owners to park the car, but treat the free repair as urgent.

What's wrong, in plain English

The control unit that decides when the airbags fire was welded into the wrong position at the factory. In a crash, that can make the airbags go off the wrong way, so they may not protect you as designed. The same fault can also set the airbags off when there is no crash at all, which can injure you and increase the risk of a crash. Dealers replace the airbag control unit free of charge.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your Jetta is included.
2. Call a Volkswagen dealer or VW customer service at 1-800-893-5298 and reference recall 69CK.
