What is behind the Volkswagen airbag recalls on Atlas and Jetta?
The Atlas sits at the center of Volkswagen's airbag recalls, appearing in seven campaigns across the 2018 through 2024 model years. The most repeated defect is the passenger occupant detection system: a wiring fault in the seat mat switches the front passenger airbag off while someone is sitting there, covering 2018-2021 Atlas and 2020-2024 Atlas Cross Sport in two separate recalls. A second pattern is simply the wrong or wrongly built part — an incorrect driver airbag in 2017-2018 Tiguan Limited and 2019 Jetta, incorrect side airbags in 2019 Atlas and 2020 Passat, a missing weld, a badly folded passenger bag, a loose inflator in 2023-2024 ID.4. Separately, 2017-2019 Beetles and older Passats carry an inflator that can explode.
Warning signs to watch for
- Airbag warning light illuminated on the dash
- Passenger airbag-off indicator lit with an adult in the front seat
- Water draining into the cabin area on a 2018 Atlas with a twisted AC drain tube
- An airbag deploying on its own, with no warning, while driving
- Most of these faults show nothing at all until a crash happens
Is it safe to keep driving?
None of these recalls carries a do-not-drive or park-outside instruction, so you can keep driving while the repair is scheduled. Several are still urgent. The 2017-2019 Beetle and Passat inflator can explode and injure or kill the driver in an otherwise survivable crash. The 2018 Atlas water-damaged control module and the 2020-2021 Jetta mis-welded module can set airbags off with no warning while you drive. The remaining faults matter only in a crash, but they leave a driver or passenger with less protection. Do not let these sit.
What the free repair involves
Most repairs are part replacement rather than software. Dealers replace the driver or passenger frontal airbag, the side impact airbag, the airbag control module, the crash sensor, or the steering wheel together with the correct driver airbag. For the occupant detection recalls they replace the PODS sensor mat and wiring harness; for the 2018 Atlas, the twisted AC drain tube and control module; for the 2019-2022 Atlas, front door wiring harnesses. All free of charge.

Why did a Beetle airbag recall appear in late 2024?
The driver's frontal airbag inflator can explode due to propellant degradation after long-term exposure. It covers 2017-2019 Beetle and Beetle Convertible, 2012-2014 Passat, 2017 Passat Wagon and 2006-2007 Passat Sedan. Letters were mailed December 4, 2024.
The 2019 Atlas side airbag recall says it was completed. Do I need anything?
Volkswagen inspected and replaced incorrect driver or front passenger side impact airbags on certain 2019 Atlas and 2020 Passat vehicles, and reported that recall completed in April 2019. Check your VIN to confirm your own car was included and repaired.
