This is serious if you carry a child seat, and although Mitsubishi issued no park-it warning, you should get it fixed quickly and check that any child seat is firmly secured in the meantime.

What's wrong, in plain English

Seat belts have a locking mode you use to hold a child car seat tight — you pull the belt all the way out and it clicks as it retracts. On these SUVs, that lock can switch off too early on the front passenger belt and both second-row belts. If it does, the child seat may not be held firmly in place. A loose child seat can move in a crash, so a child could be hurt more badly.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your Outlander is affected.
2. Contact your Mitsubishi dealer, or MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820 (recall SR-21-007), to schedule service.
3. The dealer inspects and replaces the affected seat belt assemblies as necessary, free of charge.

Summary: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain 2022 Outlander vehicles. The front and second-row passenger seat belt automatic locking retractors may deactivate early, which can prevent the child restraint system from securing properly. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."
Safety risk: An unsecured child restraint system can increase the risk of injury during a crash.
Remedy: Dealers will inspect, and replace as necessary, the right front seat belt assembly, and the right and left second-row seat belt assemblies, free of charge. Owner letters were mailed September 28, 2021. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA's number for this recall is SR-21-007.
