Mitsubishi Outlander seat belt recalls: child seats and second-row belts
All four of these Mitsubishi recalls are Outlander seat belt problems, and three of them center on the second row. The 2014-2019 Outlander and 2018-2019 Outlander PHEV can have the second-row center buckle interfere with the right-side buckle when the seat backs are folded down, leaving the right-side belt unable to latch. On 2019-2020 Outlander and 2019 Outlander PHEV, the right second-row belt may simply have been assembled incorrectly. The 2022 Outlander is recalled twice for the same defect: automatic locking retractors in the right front and both outboard second-row belts deactivate early, so a child restraint cannot be cinched tight. Right-side seats recur throughout.
Warning signs to watch for
- The second-row right buckle will not latch, or the latch feels blocked, especially after the seat backs have been folded down.
- A child seat that will not stay tight because the belt lets slack back out instead of staying locked.
- A belt that retracts or locks differently from the one on the opposite side of the same row.
- Often no warning at all — an incorrectly assembled belt can look and feel normal until it is needed in a crash.
Is it safe to keep driving?
None of these four Outlander recalls tells owners to stop driving or park the vehicle, and none of them affects how it drives. The restrictions are about who sits where. For the folded-seat buckle interference, avoid using the second-row right seat until the repair is done, since that belt may not latch. If you carry a child seat in a 2022 Outlander, check that it is firmly secured every time and get the retractor recall done quickly. The assembly defect also needs prompt inspection.
What the free repair involves
All work is free. For the 2019-2020 assembly defect, dealers inspect the right second-row belt and replace it if needed. For the 2022 retractor recalls, they inspect and replace the right front and both second-row outboard belt assemblies as necessary. For the buckle interference, dealers modify the second-row center buckle cover and add new warning labels plus an owner's manual insert.
