On certain Sonata sedans, a damaged check valve can let air get into the fuel tank. The tank then swells up and can touch hot exhaust parts underneath the car, which melts the plastic. A melted tank can leak gasoline. Dealers will inspect and replace the check valve, look over the fuel tank and replace it if it is damaged, and also check and update the engine computer software. All of this work is done at no cost to you.
A software problem can make the brake lights flash rather than coming on and staying on steadily when you press the brake pedal. Drivers behind you may be confused about whether you are slowing or stopping, which makes it more likely someone runs into the back of your car. Dealers will reload the rear brake light software at no cost, and Hyundai is also sending the fix to cars wirelessly as an over-the-air update.
These cars have a system that shuts the engine off at stoplights to save fuel. The electronic controller for that system's oil pump may have damaged parts inside, and it can overheat. An overheating pump unit can start a fire in the car. Hyundai says park outside and away from buildings until the repair is done. Dealers check the oil pump controller and replace it if needed, at no charge to you.

Certain Hyundai Santa Fe, Sonata, Veloster N, Santa Cruz, Elantra N and Kona N vehicles have a problem with the transmission's oil pump. Normally, if the pump fails, the car drops into a backup mode that still lets you limp along. On these vehicles that backup mode may not work properly, and the car can lose drive power completely — meaning it stops pulling and you can no longer accelerate. Dealers will inspect and, if needed, replace the transmission and update its software free of charge.
These cars have a release inside the trunk so anyone shut in can get out. On the vehicles being recalled, the trunk latch can become damaged, and when it does, the trunk may no longer open from the inside. Someone inside the trunk could become trapped and injured. Nothing about how the car drives or stops is affected, but it is worth keeping children from playing in or near the trunk until the dealer inspects the latch and replaces part of it.
When these Hyundais were built, the windshield may not have been glued to the body properly. The glass is supposed to stay bonded in place, including during a crash. If the bond is weak, the windshield can come loose and fall out in a collision, so people inside are more likely to be hurt. The dealer will remove the front windshield and reinstall it properly, at no cost to you.
The latch on the trunk lid can become damaged. If that happens, the release handle inside the trunk will not open it, so anyone who ends up shut in the trunk — most often a child playing — cannot get out on their own. Federal rules require trunks to open from the inside, and these cars no longer meet that rule. Nothing about the way the car drives is affected. A dealer will replace the latch base at no cost.
These Santa Fe and Sonata models with the 2.5-liter turbocharged engine can leak gasoline at the joint where the pipe from the high-pressure fuel pump meets the fuel rail on the engine. Leaking fuel in the engine bay raises the risk of a fire. Dealers will inspect that fuel pipe and either tighten the connection or replace the pipe, free of charge. Hyundai mailed owner notification letters on September 3, 2021.
These cars have a feature that lets you park them using the key fob while you stand outside. The software that controls it is faulty. If the remote parking system develops a problem, the software may not stop the car from moving as it should. That means the vehicle could move when you did not intend it to. A dealer will reload corrected software into the system, which fixes the problem without replacing any parts.
The sticker inside the driver's door and the owner's manual on some 2020 Hyundai Sonatas list the wrong tire size for the car. If you or a tire shop go by that information when buying replacements, you could end up with tires that are the wrong size. Wrong-size tires can change the way the car steers and handles. Dealers will put a corrected sticker over the bad label and fix the manual, free of charge.
