Hyundai Sonata and Genesis G70 trunk release may fail

NHTSA campaign 22V196000 · Reported 2022-03-28 · Hyundai Motor America

medium How serious is it? About this label

A person inside the trunk compartment may become trapped, increasing their risk of injury. The notice does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

These cars have a release inside the trunk so anyone shut in can get out. On the vehicles being recalled, the trunk latch can become damaged, and when it does, the trunk may no longer open from the inside. Someone inside the trunk could become trapped and injured. Nothing about how the car drives or stops is affected, but it is worth keeping children from playing in or near the trunk until the dealer inspects the latch and replaces part of it.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to check whether your car is included.
2. Contact your Hyundai or Genesis dealer, or Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460, and mention recall 221/010G.
3. Have the trunk latch inspected and the latch base replaced if needed — at no cost to you.
