Ford has not told owners to stop driving, but flying pieces of the airbag cover during a crash could injure the driver, so get the repair done promptly.

What's wrong, in plain English

The plastic cover over the driver's airbag, in the middle of the steering wheel, may not be strong enough. When the airbag inflates in a crash, that cover is supposed to split open cleanly. Instead it could shatter and throw pieces toward the driver and other people in the truck. The airbag itself still works; the problem is what the cover does as it opens. Dealers replace the whole driver's airbag unit.

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your 2022 F-250 or F-350 is covered.
2. Contact a Ford dealer or Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 and mention recall 21S49.
3. Have the driver-side airbag module replaced free of charge; letters were mailed December 16, 2021.

Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2022 Super Duty F-250 and F-350 vehicles. The strength of the driver-side air bag cover may be insufficient.
Safety risk: During a crash, the air bag cover may break apart and project fragments towards occupants, increasing the risk of injury.
Remedy: Dealers will replace the driver-side air bag module, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 16, 2021. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 21S49.
