Tesla backup camera image may be delayed in reverse

NHTSA campaign 22V169000 · Reported 2022-03-18 · Tesla, Inc.

medium How serious is it? About this label

Moderate — a delayed camera image mainly raises the risk of backing into a person or object, and the notice does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

When you shift into reverse, the picture from the backup camera may not appear on the screen right away. On these vehicles the image can be delayed instead of showing immediately, so for a moment you cannot see what is behind you. Anything low or close behind the car — a child, a pet, a post — may not be visible during that delay. The vehicles do not meet the federal rear visibility standard. Tesla fixes this with a software update sent to the car.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your vehicle is covered, or call Tesla at 1-877-798-3752 and reference SB-22-00-004.
2. Make sure your car is connected to Wi-Fi and accept the free over-the-air software update when it appears; contact Tesla service if it does not install.
3. Until the update is installed, check your mirrors and look over your shoulder before backing up.
