Why does my Tesla backup camera go blank in reverse?
All five of these Tesla recalls come down to the same failure: the rearview image does not appear the moment you shift into reverse, putting the vehicles out of compliance with FMVSS 111. The causes differ — an Autopilot Computer 2.5 firmware bug on 2017-2020 Model 3, an infotainment CPU that overheats while preparing to fast-charge on 2021-2022 Model S/X and 2022 Model 3/Y, a computer circuit board that may short on 2024-2025 Model 3 and Model Y, and software version 2026.8.6 on 2017 and 2021-2023 cars. Model 3 appears in every one of the five; Model Y and Model S follow closely, and the 2024 Cybertruck has its own delayed-image recall.
Warning signs to watch for
- A black or blank screen for a moment after you shift into reverse
- The rearview image never appears at all while backing up
- The center touchscreen lags, freezes or restarts around fast charging
- Loss of the gear display on the center screen along with the camera view
Is it safe to keep driving?
None of the five notices tells owners to stop driving or to park outside, and none places a restriction on driving. The cars still drive, steer and brake normally; what you lose is the view behind you. Until the update lands, the notices advise backing up slowly, checking your mirrors, and turning to look behind you rather than trusting the screen. The circuit board recall is the one where hardware may actually have failed, so if your camera is dead rather than slow, have it looked at promptly.
What the free repair involves
Four of the five are handled by a free over-the-air software update that installs while the car is parked and connected — no appointment needed. For the circuit board recall, Tesla also identifies vehicles whose board failed, or shows stress that may lead to failure, and replaces the affected part. Everything is free of charge.

Do I need a service appointment to fix my Tesla's backup camera?
Usually not. Four of the five recalls are delivered over the air, so the car updates itself once connected. Only the circuit board recall may need a visit, and only if Tesla identifies a failed or stressed board on your vehicle.
My reverse camera looks fine — is my Tesla still affected?
Possibly. Several of these recalls cover specific firmware or software versions rather than symptoms, and the delay may only show up sometimes. Check your VIN on NHTSA's recall lookup or in the Tesla app, and install any pending update.
Is it a problem to drive while the camera image is delayed?
The notices frame this as a federal compliance failure for Tesla, and none of the five restricts driving. Still, the risk is backing into a person or object, so reverse slowly, use your mirrors and look behind you until the update installs.
