Tesla Model 3 Speedometer May Hide Speed Units

NHTSA campaign 22V263000 · Reported 2022-04-18 · Tesla, Inc.

medium How serious is it? About this label

Moderate: not knowing your true speed increases the risk of a crash, but the notice does not tell you to stop driving, and the fix arrives wirelessly.

What's wrong, in plain English

On certain 2018-2022 Tesla Model 3 Performance cars, the speedometer may not show whether the number you see is in miles per hour or kilometers per hour while the car is in Track Mode. Without those units, you may not be sure how fast you are actually going. This also means the car does not meet a federal rule about controls and displays. Tesla fixes it with a software update sent to the car over the air, at no cost.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your Model 3 is covered. 2. Keep your car connected to Wi-Fi and install the over-the-air software update when it is offered. 3. If you do not receive it, call Tesla at 1-877-798-3752 and mention recall SB-22-00-008 — the fix is free.
