Tesla electrical recalls: software glitches, camera wiring and battery disconnects
Tesla's electrical system recalls are dominated by software, and by the Model 3, which appears in nearly all eleven. Most are compliance fixes to what the car shows or sounds: a missing seat-belt chime, Boombox audio drowning out the pedestrian warning speaker (recalled twice, February and April 2022), Brake/Park/ABS warning lights in too small a font, missing mph units in Track Mode on 2018-2022 Model 3 Performance, and FSD Beta rolling through all-way stops. Driver-assist behavior shows up in the December 2023 Autosteer recall spanning 2012-2023 Model S through 2020-2023 Model Y. Only three are hardware: a trunk-lid-chafed camera harness on 2017-2020 Model 3, a defective pyrotechnic battery disconnect on 2023 Model 3 and Model Y, and a Cybertruck drive inverter.
Warning signs to watch for
- No buckle-up chime when you start the car without your seat belt fastened
- Rearview camera image gone entirely on an older Model 3, where the trunk lid has chafed the harness
- Weak or slow windshield defrosting in cold or damp weather
- Brake, Park and ABS warning lights that are hard to read on the instrument panel
- Sudden loss of drive power to the wheels on a Cybertruck
Is it safe to keep driving?
No recall in this group carries a stop-driving or park-outside instruction. The low-severity ones — seat-belt chime, Boombox, warning-light font — leave the car fully usable. Two deserve faster scheduling: the Cybertruck drive inverter, because power to the wheels can be lost while you are moving, and the pyrotechnic battery disconnect, which only matters after a crash or fault but is safety-critical then. With the Autosteer recall, keep driving but stay fully in control whenever Autosteer is engaged.
What the free repair involves
Most of the eleven are handled by a free over-the-air update — disabling rolling stops and Boombox in Drive, Neutral and Reverse, restoring the chime, correcting the heat pump valve logic, font size and speed units, and strengthening Autosteer's driver controls. The hardware recalls need service: inspecting the Model 3 camera harness and adding a guide protector, and replacing the pyrotechnic battery disconnect or Cybertruck drive inverter. All free.

Common questions
Why was the Boombox function recalled twice?
Two separate notices, in February and April 2022, cover the same concern across overlapping model ranges; the April one also disables Boombox during Summon and Smart Summon. Both updates turn the external sound off in Drive, Neutral and Reverse.
Does the Autosteer recall mean Autopilot is unsafe to use?
The notice says the prominence and scope of the controls may not be enough to prevent driver misuse, not that Autosteer itself fails. The update strengthens those controls. Keep driving, but stay fully in control whenever Autosteer is on.
What is a pyrotechnic battery disconnect, and why does it matter?
It is the device that disconnects the high-voltage battery from the rest of the car after a crash or fault. On certain 2023 Model 3 and Model Y it may be defective, so Tesla Service replaces it free of charge.
