Serious for families, because a loose child seat can let a child be hurt in a crash; the notice does not say to stop driving the vehicle.

What's wrong, in plain English

Three seat belts — the front passenger belt and both outer second-row belts — have a locking mode you use to hold a child seat tight. You pull the belt all the way out and it ratchets so it cannot loosen. On these Outlanders, that locking mode can switch off before the belt has pulled all the way snug, so a child seat held by that belt may end up loose instead of firmly secured.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your Outlander is affected. 2. Contact a Mitsubishi dealer, or Mitsubishi customer service at 1-888-648-7820 (recall SR-22-002), to have the belts inspected. 3. Any faulty seat belt assemblies will be replaced free of charge.

Summary: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain 2022 Outlander vehicles. The Automatic Locking Retractor (ALR) in the right front, second-row right, and second-row left seat belt assemblies may deactivate before the seat belts are fully retracted, which can result in an unsecured child restraint system. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."
Safety risk: An unsecured child restraint system can increase the risk of injury during a crash.
Remedy: Dealers will inspect and replace the seat belt assemblies, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 7, 2022. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-88-648-7820. MMNA's number for this recall is SR-22-002.
