Kia Sorento Hybrid seat belt tighteners can explode in crash

NHTSA campaign 22V447000 · Reported 2022-06-23 · Kia Motors America

high How serious is it? About this label

The part only fails during a crash, but it can injure occupants when it does, and the notice does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

The front seat belts have a small device that yanks the belt tight in a crash. On these vehicles, that device can blow apart when it goes off. If it does, metal pieces can fly into the cabin and hit the people inside, causing injuries. This affects the driver's side belt, the passenger's side belt, or both. The dealer will fit a cap over the part so it cannot throw fragments. If your car was already fixed under the earlier recall 22V-127, it still needs this new repair.

What you should do

1. Look up your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, even if you had the earlier recall done. 2. Contact your Kia dealer or Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542 (recall SC241) for an appointment. 3. Have the caps installed on the seat belt parts — the repair is free.
