What's wrong, in plain English

The bolts holding the clutch cover onto the engine were not greased properly when these motorcycles were built. Without that lubrication, the bolts can work themselves loose and the clutch cover can start leaking engine oil. BMW says an oil leak at the clutch cover raises the risk of a crash or a fire. Dealers will replace all ten clutch cover bolts at no charge to the owner.

2. Schedule the bolt replacement with a BMW Motorrad dealer, or call BMW at 1-800-525-7417.
3. Have all ten clutch cover bolts replaced — the repair is free.

Summary: BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2022 S1000RR, M1000RR, and 2022-2023 S1000XR and S1000R motorcycles. The clutch cover bolts were not lubricated properly, which may cause the clutch cover to become loose and leak oil.
Safety risk: An oil leak occurring at the clutch cover increases the risk of a crash or fire.
Remedy: Dealers will replace all 10 clutch cover bolts, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 6, 2022. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
