BMW S 1000 RR ignition lock failure can stall engine

What's wrong, in plain English

Vibration from riding can wear out a part inside the ignition lock until it fails. When that happens, the instrument display can go dark, the rear lights can quit, safety systems such as anti-lock brakes can stop working, or the engine can shut off while you are riding. BMW does not have the fix ready yet. Letters warning owners are expected in September 2026, and a second letter will follow once the repair is available.

How serious is it?

Serious — an engine that stalls mid-ride, or a loss of ABS and rear lighting, increases the risk of a crash, and no repair is available yet; the notice does not tell riders to stop riding.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls — these VINs become searchable beginning September 14, 2026.
2. Watch for the second BMW letter announcing that the remedy is ready, then book the free repair with a BMW motorcycle dealer.
3. For questions in the meantime, call BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Summary
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2024 S 1000 RR US, and 2020-2026 S 1000 RR motorcycles. The vibration of the motorcycle may cause an internal component of the ignition lock to fail, which can cause the instrument display, rear lighting, and other systems such as ABS to fail, or cause an engine stall while riding.
Safety risk
An engine stall or failure of electrical systems such as the instrument display or ABS, increases the risk of a crash.
Remedy
The remedy is currently under development. Letters informing owners of the safety risk are expected to be mailed September 14, 2026. Additional letters will be sent once the remedy is available. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will become searchable on NHTSA.gov beginning September 14, 2026.
