Ford Bronco backup camera image stays on screen

NHTSA campaign 22V825000 · Reported 2022-11-03 · Ford Motor Company

low How serious is it? About this label

This is the mildest kind of recall — a distraction rather than a part that can break — and the notice gives no warning against driving the vehicle.

What's wrong, in plain English

On these Broncos with the 8-inch screen, the backup camera picture can stay on the display after you shift out of reverse and start driving forward, instead of switching off. A camera view still showing while you drive can pull your attention away from the road. It also means the vehicle does not meet the federal rear-visibility rule. The fix is updated SYNC software, installed at a dealer or sent to the vehicle over the air.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your Bronco is affected.
2. Watch for the over-the-air update to arrive, or contact your Ford dealer or Ford at 1-866-436-7332 about recall 22C27.
3. Have the SYNC software updated — free either way.

Summary
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2021-2022 Bronco vehicles equipped with rearview camera systems and 8-inch screen displays. The rearview camera image may still be displayed after a backing event has ended. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rear Visibility."
Safety risk
A rearview image that continues to be displayed after the vehicle is shifted out of reverse may distract the driver, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
The SYNC module software will be updated by a dealer, or through an over-the-air (OTA) update, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on March 25, 2024. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 22C27. (over-the-air software update)
