Honda Fit and HR-V backup camera may not appear

NHTSA campaign 23V046000 · Reported 2023-02-02 · Honda (American Honda Motor Co.)

medium How serious is it? About this label

An inoperative rearview camera display can reduce the driver's rear visibility, increasing the risk of a crash. The notice does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

When you start the engine using a key, the backup camera picture may fail to show up on the dashboard screen. It is a design mistake in the circuit that powers the audio and display unit. Without that picture you cannot see what is directly behind you while reversing, which is why these vehicles do not meet the federal rear visibility rule. Dealers reload the display unit's software for free, and it does not take long.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls before booking anything. 2. Contact your Honda dealer, or Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138, and ask about recall 24V-384, which replaced this one. 3. Get the free software update — even if your car was already repaired under 23V-046, it needs the newer fix.
