Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator manual clutch can overheat, catch fire

NHTSA campaign 23V116000 · Reported 2023-02-23 · Chrysler (FCA US, LLC)

critical How serious is it? About this label

Serious: this is a fire risk plus the chance of suddenly losing drive power or dropping debris on the road, so get it repaired as soon as you can and stop driving if you smell burning or notice the clutch behaving strangely.

What's wrong, in plain English

These Jeep Wranglers and Gladiators have a manual transmission, and the clutch — the part that connects the engine to the gears when you press the left pedal — can get too hot and crack apart. Overheated clutch parts can start a fire. Broken pieces can also damage nearby parts, drop debris onto the road, or leave the vehicle unable to move under its own power. The dealer replaces the whole clutch assembly and updates the software, free.

What you should do

1. Look up your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your Jeep is included in recall 19A.
2. Call your Jeep dealer, or FCA US customer service at 1-800-853-1403, and get an appointment for the free clutch replacement and software update.
3. If your vehicle was already repaired under the older recall 21V-028, you still need this new repair done — that earlier fix does not count.
