Why does my Mitsubishi Outlander backup camera image not appear?
Every recall in this group is the same failure on the same vehicle: the Mitsubishi Outlander's rearview camera image does not appear, or freezes, when you shift into reverse, so the vehicle fails Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 111 on rear visibility. The cause is software, in the rearview camera or the Alliance In-Vehicle Infotainment (A-IVI) system, never a broken camera or wiring. The 2022 and 2023 Outlander and 2023 Outlander PHEV appear repeatedly, because the 2025 recall replaced and expanded earlier ones and pulled in the 2024 Outlander and 2025 PHEV. The newest campaign covers 2025-2026 Outlander and 2026 Outlander PHEV. Gas and plug-in hybrid Outlanders are both affected.
Warning signs to watch for
- A blank display instead of the camera view when you shift into reverse.
- A rearview image that freezes on one picture while you are still backing up.
- An image that works sometimes and not others, since the fault is a software error rather than a dead camera.
- Nothing else changes — the notices describe no effect on steering, braking or how the vehicle drives.
Is it safe to keep driving?
None of these four recalls tells you to stop driving or park outside, and none affects steering, braking or power. The vehicle is safe to drive. What changes is backing up: with the image missing or frozen, you see less behind you, so turn and look over your shoulder, use your mirrors, and have someone guide you in tight spots rather than trusting the screen. A frozen picture deserves extra caution, because it can look correct while showing you a scene that is already out of date.
What the free repair involves
Every fix here is a free software update installed by a Mitsubishi dealer — the rearview camera software in the 2022 recall, and the Alliance In-Vehicle Infotainment (A-IVI) software in the others. No camera, wiring or display hardware is replaced, and none of these updates is delivered over the air, so the vehicle has to visit the dealer.

Common questions
My Outlander already had this fixed. Why did another letter arrive?
Mitsubishi's 2025 recall replaced and expanded the earlier camera campaigns and added the 2024 Outlander and 2025 Outlander PHEV. An earlier repair does not cover the newer campaign, so schedule whichever update your most recent letter names.
The notices say my Outlander fails a federal safety standard. What does that mean for me?
It means the vehicle does not meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 111 on rear visibility, which obligates Mitsubishi to fix it free of charge. The notices place no driving restriction on owners; just get the update scheduled.
Is the Outlander PHEV affected too?
Yes. The 2023 and 2025 Outlander PHEV appear in these recalls, and the newest campaign covers the 2026 Outlander PHEV. The infotainment software error behaves the same way on plug-in hybrid and gasoline Outlanders.
