Tesla Model 3 battery cutoff may fail after crash

NHTSA campaign 23V434000 · Reported 2023-06-19 · Tesla, Inc.

high How serious is it? About this label

Potentially serious, but the notice does not tell owners to stop driving, since the danger only appears after a crash or fault, so you can keep driving while you schedule the free repair.

What's wrong, in plain English

These cars have a small explosive-powered switch that is supposed to cut off the high-voltage battery after a crash or when the car detects a fault. On some vehicles that switch may be defective and may not shut the power down when it should. If it fails, the battery could stay live after a crash, and anyone touching the wrong parts could get an electric shock and be injured. Tesla will replace the switch free of charge.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if your car is covered.
2. Schedule service through the Tesla app, or call 1-877-798-3752, and reference SB-23-16-005.
3. Have the pyrotechnic battery disconnect replaced at no cost.
