Jeep Wrangler spare tire blocks center brake light

NHTSA campaign 23V565000 · Reported 2023-08-10 · Chrysler (FCA US, LLC)

medium How serious is it? About this label

A hidden brake light raises the chance of being rear-ended, and while the notice does not tell owners to stop driving, you should get the free fix promptly and leave extra room in traffic.

What's wrong, in plain English

On these Wranglers, the spare tire mounted on the back can block the view of the brake light high in the center of the rear window. When you press the brake pedal, drivers behind you may not see that light come on, so they may not realize you are slowing or stopping. The vehicle does not meet the federal rule for vehicle lights. A dealer will replace the carrier that holds the spare tire, free of charge.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your Wrangler is covered. 2. Call your Jeep dealer, or FCA US customer service at 1-800-853-1403, and ask for recall 84A. 3. Have the spare tire carrier replaced; the repair is free.
