What's wrong, in plain English

If the 12-volt battery in these RAV4s was replaced with one that does not fit the tray properly, it can slide around while you drive. A loose battery can touch the metal clamp that holds it down, which can cause a short circuit and start a fire under the hood. Dealers replace the battery clamp, the tray it sits in, and the cover over the positive terminal so the battery stays put.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if your RAV4 is covered.
2. Call a Toyota dealer, or Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331, and mention recall 23TB13 or 23TA13.
3. Have the clamp, tray, and terminal cover replaced — the repair is free. Owner letters are going out in phases, so you do not have to wait for yours to arrive.

Summary
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2013-2018 RAV4 vehicles. Certain replacement 12-volt batteries may not fit properly in the battery tray, allowing the battery to move and contact the hold-down bracket, possibly causing a short circuit.
Safety risk
A battery short circuit increases the risk of a fire.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the battery clamp sub-assembly, battery tray, and positive terminal cover, free of charge. Owner letters were mailed December 27, 2024, to 2013-2014 RAV4 owners. Additional owner notification letters will be mailed in phases, phase 2 will begin on May 14, 2025, and phase 3 in late July 2025. Owners may contact Toyota's customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's numbers for this recall are 23TB13 and 23TA13.
