Tesla Autosteer Controls May Not Prevent Driver Misuse

NHTSA campaign 23V838000 · Reported 2023-12-12 · Tesla, Inc.

medium How serious is it? About this label

In certain circumstances when Autosteer is engaged, and the driver does not maintain responsibility for vehicle operation and is unprepared to intervene as necessary or fails to recognize when Autosteer is canceled or not engaged, there may be an increased risk of a crash. The notice does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

Certain Tesla Model S, Model X, Model 3 and Model Y vehicles have Autosteer, a feature that helps steer the car but still requires the driver to stay in charge. Tesla says the on-screen controls and warnings for Autosteer are not clear or strong enough to keep drivers from misusing it, and a driver may not notice when Autosteer has shut off or was never turned on. Tesla fixes this with a free software update sent over the internet.
