What's wrong, in plain English

Debris got in the way when the rear axle was assembled, so the nuts holding it may not be tight enough. Over time the axle shaft can work its way out of the axle housing. If it comes apart while you are driving, the truck can become hard to control and your brakes may not work the way they should. A dealer inspects the rear axle, tightens the nuts, and repairs or replaces any damaged parts for free.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see whether your Tacoma is included.
2. Schedule the free inspection and repair with a Toyota dealer, or call Toyota at 1-800-331-4331 (recall 24TB05 or 24TA05).
3. If you notice noise, vibration, or fluid leaking from the rear axle area, stop driving and have the truck towed to the dealer.

Remedy
Dealers will inspect the rear axle assembly, tighten the axle retaining nuts as necessary, and repair or replace any damaged components, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 17, 2024. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's numbers for this recall are 24TB05 and 24TA05.
