Kia EV9 and Niro EV may lose drive power

NHTSA campaign 24V271000 · Reported 2024-04-16 · Kia America, Inc.

critical How serious is it? About this label

Very serious, because power loss or a locked differential can happen suddenly at speed; the notice does not tell owners to stop driving, but this repair should not wait.

What's wrong, in plain English

Bolts inside the gear drive unit, the part that sends power from the electric motor to the wheels, may not have been tightened enough. If they loosen, the car can suddenly lose drive power while you are moving, or the unit can lock up, which would stop the wheels from turning freely. Either one could happen with no warning and lead to a crash. Dealers will replace the whole gear drive unit at no charge.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your vehicle is included. 2. Call Kia at 1-800-333-4542 or your dealer and ask for recall SC308. 3. Have the gear drive unit replaced free of charge.
