Kia EV9 front passenger seat belt may not lock

NHTSA campaign 24V338000 · Reported 2024-05-14 · Kia America, Inc.

high How serious is it? About this label

Serious — the notice says a retractor that doesn't work right increases injury risk in a crash; you are not told to stop driving, but avoid putting a child seat or passenger in that front seat until it's repaired.

What's wrong, in plain English

The cover over the front passenger seat belt reel may not be fastened down correctly. That reel is what locks the belt in place — both the locking mode used to hold a child seat tight and the locking that grabs the belt in a sudden stop or crash. If it doesn't lock the way it should, the belt may not hold the person or child seat properly. Dealers will replace the whole front passenger belt assembly at no cost.
