Kia EV9 roof headliner offers too little crash protection

NHTSA campaign 24V400000 · Reported 2024-06-04 · Kia America, Inc.

medium How serious is it? About this label

A headliner with inadequate impact protection increases the risk of injury during a crash. The notice does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

The headliner is the padded lining on the inside of the roof, just above your head. On certain 2024 Kia EV9 models, it does not absorb enough impact, so it gives less protection than required if someone's head strikes the roof area in a crash. These vehicles do not meet the federal rule for interior impact protection. A dealer replaces the impact-absorbing plates mounted on the headliner at no cost.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if your EV9 is covered. 2. Contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542 or your dealer and mention recall SC317. 3. Schedule the free replacement of the headliner impact-absorbing plates.
