Volkswagen Atlas passenger airbag may switch off wrongly

NHTSA campaign 24V464000 · Reported 2024-06-20 · Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.

high How serious is it? About this label

A deactivated passenger air bag increases the risk of injury during a crash. The notice does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

A sensor mat in the front passenger seat tells the car whether someone is sitting there. Wiring for that sensor can fault, and the car may then turn off the front passenger airbag even when an adult is in the seat. If a crash happens, that airbag would not inflate and the passenger could be hurt more badly. The dealer will replace the sensor mat and the wiring at no charge. Owner letters went out in stages between September 2024 and January 2025.
