Volkswagen Atlas and Golf backup camera image may fail

NHTSA campaign 24V480000 · Reported 2024-06-27 · Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.

medium How serious is it? About this label

This is one of the milder recalls and the notice does not tell owners to stop driving, but until it is fixed you should back up slowly and look over your shoulder, because a missing camera view raises the chance of hitting a person or object behind you.

What's wrong, in plain English

When you shift into reverse, the picture from the backup camera may come up late or not at all. That means the screen may not show you what is directly behind the car while you are backing up. Because of this, these vehicles do not meet the federal rule for rear visibility. The fix is a software update to the infotainment system, which is the screen system in the dash. Dealers do this free.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your vehicle is included.
2. Call a Volkswagen dealer and ask for recall 91US, or call VW customer service at 1-800-893-5298.
3. Have the software update done — it is free, and letters were mailed in July 2024.

Summary
Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (VW) is recalling certain 2022-2024 Golf R, Golf GTI, 2024 Atlas, and 2024 Atlas Cross Sport vehicles. The rearview camera image may be delayed or deactivated after shifting into reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rear Visibility."
Safety risk
A rearview camera with a delayed or deactivated image reduces the driver's view of what is behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of injury or crash.
Remedy
Dealers will update the infotainment system software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 15, 2024, and July 16, 2024. Owners may contact VW customer service at 1-800-893-5298. VW's number for this recall is 91US.
