Why does the Volkswagen backup camera screen go blank in reverse?
Almost every recall here is the same complaint: the rearview camera image does not appear, appears late, or looks distorted when you shift into reverse, which makes the vehicle fail Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 111, "Rear Visibility." The ID.4 leads with five campaigns spanning the 2021 through 2024 model years, including one where displays fail to boot or reset and the speedometer can disappear. The Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport recur through 2024-2026, and the Tiguan, Jetta, Golf GTI and Golf R turn up as well. Causes shift over time — infotainment software, an eMMC memory module, camera control unit startup errors, and in a 2026 Atlas recall a low-voltage electrical event.

- Black or blank screen when you shift into reverse
- Camera image delayed, distorted, or unresponsive
- Infotainment system freezes during an ignition cycle
- Center display or instrument panel fails to boot or resets on its own
- Loss of speedometer information on a 2021-2023 ID.4
Is it safe to keep driving?
No recall in this group tells owners to stop driving or park outside. The vehicles drive normally; what you lose is the view behind you, so Volkswagen's guidance is to back up slowly, use your mirrors, and turn to look over your shoulder until the repair is done. Treat the 2021-2023 ID.4 display recall as the most pressing of the set, because that software fault can also take away your speedometer or reset the instrument panel while you are driving, not just when reversing.
What the free repair involves
Most of these are fixed with a software update at the dealer — infotainment software, overall vehicle software, or camera control unit software. A few need hardware instead: the 2022 Golf R and 2022-2023 ID.4 recall replaces the rearview camera, and one 2023 ID.4 recall replaces the peripheral camera control module. None is listed as an over-the-air update, so a dealer visit is required. All repairs are free.

Common questions
Can Volkswagen fix my backup camera over the air?
No. None of these camera recalls is listed as an over-the-air update, even the ones that are purely software. You need a dealer appointment to have the infotainment, vehicle, or camera control unit software updated, at no cost to you.
My Tiguan was already repaired once and I got another letter. Why?
A 2026 recall covers certain 2024 Tiguans previously repaired under recall 25V082, where the camera control unit can still error at startup and fail to display the image. Dealers apply a camera control unit software update again, free of charge.
Is a blank backup camera really a safety violation?
Yes. These vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rear Visibility," which is why they are recalled. That does not penalize you; it obligates Volkswagen to repair the camera system at no charge.
