Ford F-650 and F-750 Trucks May Lose Steering

NHTSA campaign 24V494000 · Reported 2024-06-28 · Ford Motor Company

critical How serious is it? About this label

Very serious — a broken tie rod means losing steering control with no warning; the notice does not tell owners to stop driving, but schedule the inspection as soon as you can.

What's wrong, in plain English

Tie rods are the metal links that connect your steering to the front wheels. On these trucks, the ball studs inside the front tie rods may have been heat-treated incorrectly when they were made, which leaves them weak. A weak stud can snap and the tie rod can come apart. If that happens while you are driving, the steering stops working and you cannot control where the truck goes. The dealer will inspect the tie rods and replace them if needed.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your truck is included. 2. Call a Ford dealer and book the front axle tie rod inspection, Ford recall number 24S42. 3. The inspection and any replacement are free. Ford customer service: 1-866-436-7332.
