Volvo EX90 headlight covers may close while driving

NHTSA campaign 25V071000 · Reported 2025-02-07 · Volvo Car USA, LLC

high How serious is it? About this label

Losing your headlights at night is serious and increases the risk of a crash; the notice does not tell owners to stop driving, so avoid night driving if you can until the update is done.

What's wrong, in plain English

These Volvo EX90s have covers, or shutters, that sit over the headlights. Because of a software error in one of the vehicle's control units, those shutters can close over both the low and high beams while you are driving. If that happens at night or in bad weather, your headlights are blocked and you suddenly cannot see the road ahead, and other drivers have a harder time seeing you. The fix is a software update that a technician loads into the vehicle by hand.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your EX90 is included. 2. Contact your Volvo dealer, or Volvo customer service at 1-800-458-1552 (recall R10298), to schedule the software update. 3. Have the update installed — the repair is free.
