Mercedes GLC roof pillar offers too little crash padding

NHTSA campaign 25V379000 · Reported 2025-06-06 · Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC

medium How serious is it? About this label

In the event of a crash, insufficient impact protection can increase the risk of injury. The notice does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

On these SUVs built with a panoramic glass sunroof, the trim over the rear roof pillar — the post just behind the back side window — does not cushion enough. In certain crashes, a back seat passenger's head can strike that pillar, and the pillar does not absorb as much of the blow as federal rules require. Nothing about how the vehicle drives, brakes or steers is affected; the shortfall only matters if you are in a crash.

What you should do

1. Look up your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your GLC is on the list.
2. Call your Mercedes-Benz dealer or MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372 for an appointment.
3. The dealer modifies the headliner and rear pillar trim free of charge.

As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 201, "Occupant Protection in Interior Impact."
