Rivian R1S and R1T driver-assist may miss vehicle ahead

NHTSA campaign 25V585000 · Reported 2025-09-08 · Rivian Automotive, LLC

high How serious is it? About this label

Rivian does not tell owners to stop driving, but a system that fails to see the car ahead raises your chance of a crash, so install the update right away and stay fully attentive whenever the feature is on.

What's wrong, in plain English

Your Rivian's Hands-Free Highway Assist is a driver-assist feature that helps keep pace with traffic on the highway. On these R1S and R1T vehicles running software older than version 2025.18.30, that system may not correctly spot the vehicle ahead of you. If it misses the car in front, it may not react the way it should. Rivian fixes this with a free over-the-air software update that downloads to the vehicle itself, so no shop visit is needed.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your vehicle is included.
2. Park where your Rivian has a strong Wi-Fi or cellular connection and accept the over-the-air update to version 2025.18.30 or later — it is free.
3. If the update will not install, call Rivian customer service at 1-888-748-4261 and mention recall FSAM-1744.
