Why does Ford keep recalling brakes for leaks and pedal failures?
⚠ 2 of these recalls carry a do-not-drive advisory.
Ford's hydraulic brake recalls fall into three repeating buckets. Fluid leaks dominate: brake master cylinders leaking from the front wheel circuit into the booster on 2016-2018 F-150, Expedition and Navigator with 3.5L EcoBoost engines, and front brake hoses that chafe or rupture on 2018 Escape and MKC and 2013-2018 Fusion and MKZ. The pedal and booster hardware is the second cluster — a loose brake pedal assembly on 2024 Mustangs, a fracturing pedal bracket on 2020 Mustangs, a missing booster pushrod retaining spring on 2025 Super Duty trucks, and Electronic Brake Booster failures on 2025 F-150, Expedition, Bronco, Ranger and Navigator. Calipers, rear linings and ABS modules account for the rest, hitting 2019 Fiesta and 2021-2023 Bronco Sport and Escape.
Warning signs to watch for
- Brake pedal feels soft, low, or sinks toward the floor
- Pedal suddenly travels farther than normal, or goes hard and takes heavy effort
- Brake fluid warning light stays lit — on 2024 Mustangs it can stay on and hide genuinely low fluid
- Longer stopping distances, or the vehicle creeping while Auto Hold is engaged
- Several notices warn the brakes can fail suddenly with no warning at all
Is it safe to keep driving?
Two are do-not-drive. Ford tells owners of 2024 Mustangs with the incorrectly built brake pedal assembly, and 2025 F-250 through F-550 Super Duty trucks missing the booster pushrod retaining spring, not to drive until the repair is performed. Every other recall here carries no park order, so you may keep driving while you book the appointment — but these are brakes, so go soon. The notices repeat one caveat: if the pedal ever feels soft, sinks low, or goes hard, stop driving and have the vehicle towed.
What the free repair involves
It depends on the defect: replacing the brake pedal and bracket assembly, inspecting and repairing the pedal assembly, or replacing the electronic brake booster, master cylinder (plus the booster if it leaked), brake hoses, calipers with a fluid flush, brake pads, or the ABS module. Two are lighter — a body control module software update and a wire harness inspection with anti-abrasion tape. All free of charge.

Common questions
My 2024 Mustang is on the do-not-drive list. Can I drive it to the dealer?
The notice says not to drive it until the brake pedal and bracket assembly has been replaced, and it makes no exception for a trip to the dealer. Arrange towing, or call Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 to ask how they want it moved.
Why has the F-150 master cylinder been recalled more than once?
Two separate recalls describe the same leak from the front wheel circuit into the brake booster. The 2022 action covers 2016-2018 F-150 plus 2016-2017 Expedition and Navigator; the April 2025 action covers 2017-2018 F-150, Expedition and Navigator. Check your VIN against both.
My brake fluid warning light is on constantly — is that a recall?
On 2024 Mustangs it may be. After a Body Control Module service update the fluid level sensor could be misconfigured, leaving the light on permanently and masking genuinely low fluid. Dealers correct it with a free BCM software update; letters were mailed July 12, 2024.
